Why KNUST lecturers carry guns to lectures

A lecturer admitted he carries a registered gun to class after the violent protest
A violent student demonstration at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in October 2018, has left lecturers traumatized to date, the Chronicle newspaper has reported.

Unable to shake off that day’s disturbances, some lecturers carry guns to class.

“Do you know that after that, there are lecturers who come to the office with their weapons in their cars?” President of the local chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Prof Charles Marfo, told Kumasi-based Pure FM.

Students discontent over what they say is an authoritarian atmosphere on campus had been growing.

At the head of this ‘autocracy’ was the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kwasi Obiri-Danso nicknamed ‘Kumasi Adolf Hitler’. He has been accused of emboldening security guards on campus to harass and brutalize students.

And then there was the contentious issue of the conversion of a male hall of residence –University Hall – into a mixed residence.

The Hall known popularly as Katanga is seen as the bedrock of student activism. It has a pseudo-chieftaincy outfit and strong patriarchal leadership that commands respect among the students and some fear among school authorities.

They organise boisterous routine student marches and charged singing of ‘jama’ songs that is often not free from student excesses. The conversion was seen as an attempt to break the students front, a claim the university authorities have denied.

With a mixture of boiled-up student grievances, violence erupted after the students were denied a customary procession.

That October 22 2018, Monday morning protest condemned by the government led to the closure of the school, the destruction of properties valued at ¢1.6m and an intervention by the Asantehene.

The Vice-Chancellor nearly lost his job.

The media in Kumasi have been discussing the anniversary of the protests which some students say was justified. Prof. Charles Marfo called it ‘reckless’ and “needless.”

“I know a lecturer who still fears for his life. What kind of life is this? Are you saying this is what we need to celebrate?” he said.

According to Prof. Marfo, the violence that day has ‘transformed’ the attitudes of lecturers.

“If a student you are lecturing is able to set your car ablaze, the student has the capability of killing you, and so next time, if I come to lecture such a student, I don’t have to smile” he said.

Prof. Marfo confessed “confidently” to carrying a registered gun as one of the various self-protection decisions taken by lecturers who fear for their safety.

“I have to bring [the gun] along because the child I thought was a kid says he isn’t, he can set my car ablaze.”

The Professor said students need to render an unqualified apology to lecturers for the violence and hooliganism that occasioned the demonstration.

“They need to ask God for forgiveness for this” the Prof who backed the conversion of the hall said.

The Chronicle newspaper in an interview with the University Relations Officer Dr Daniel Norris Bekoe reported that the university has not sanctioned any security measure to carry guns.

Dr. Bekoe maintained campus has been calm and security there includes police officers.

Renowned cancer specialist, Professor Aderemi Ajekigbe, dies four months after he was diagnosed of prostate cancer

Renowned cancer specialist, Professor Aderemi Ajekigbe, dies?four months after he was diagnosed of?prostate cancer
Renowned cancer specialist, Professor Aderemi Tajudeen Ajekigbe has died four months after he found that he had stage four prostate cancer, which is often incurable, when it hits men.

Founder of Atinuke Cancer Foundation, Tinu Lawal broke the news in a newspaper interview saying Ajekigbe, had himself revealed his health status in June to her.

‘Welcome back. I’ve joined your league.’ Ajekigbe told Lawal who is a cancer survivor. ‘Which of your league, sir?’ the woman sought clarification.  Ajekigbe revealed he had some complications while he was sleeping. “He couldn’t carry his body. He had to call the ambulance to carry him. By the time they ran tests and everything on him, he had prostate cancer, Stage Four,” Tinu Lawal recalled the conversation in an interview with The Nation.

“This whole thing started for him just in June, not that he had it a long time ago,” she said. According to Mayo Clinic, stage 4 prostate cancer is cancer that begins in the prostate and spreads to nearby lymph nodes or to other areas of the body.

Treatments may slow or shrink an advanced prostate cancer, but for most men, stage 4 prostate cancer isn’t curable. Still, treatments can extend your life and reduce the signs and symptoms of cancer. The symptoms are painful urination, decreased force in the stream of urine, blood in the semen bone pain, swelling in the legs and fatigue.

In a statement, President Buhari condoled with the Ajekigbe family, the academia, and the medical profession, on the passage of the renowned oncologist.

Ajekigbe retired from the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in 2017 after decades of practice, rising to the headship of the Oncology and Radiology department. President Buhari prayed that God will comfort those who mourn the departed cancer specialist, urging that his good works and research findings be documented for the good of humanity.

Gani Adams raises alarm, says Nigerian governors are secretly forming state security outfits

Nigerian governors are secretly forming state security outfits - Gani Adams raises alarm

OPC leader and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has raised the alarm over the alleged secret recruitment of private individuals to form state security outfits.

He accused some governors of the Southwest states of politicizing the issue of security of lives and property in the region and alleged that some governors are training their personal aides as special forces.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State on Wednesday, October 30th, Adams condemned such training by some governors in the South-West without the knowledge of the inspector general of police or himself as the chief security of Yorubaland and leader of Oodua People's Congress.

Describing the activities of the governors as unacceptable, Adams said he would not answer them if any security threat arose in Yorubaland. He commended the complementary roles between the police and the OPC on security matters, especially in the South-West, adding that stakeholders should support the collaboration rather than work against it.
“Do you know that some South-West governors are recruiting their political errand boys for security purposes without consulting me or the OPC anymore? And when the issue of security threats comes, they will remember to call the Aare Ona Kakanfo to come and intervene.
I’m not getting a salary from the government, but I’ve been using my money to run this position and our money for this organization. When a government politicizes security, it’s doomed to fail. It’s a signal to Nigeria. If there’s any security problem in the area, they should not hold me or the IG responsible.
The IG has done his part by partnering the organisation with antecedents. But some of our governors want to politicize security issues. It’s uncalled-for and it’s unacceptable,” he said.

I don't bully Fantana, we're cool – Wendy Shay

Singer Wendy Shay has denied reports that she bullies her label mate, Fantana.

According to her, she would never bully anyone especially when she knows what it is like to be a victim of bullying.

“When we have to talk, we do. When we have to see each other, we do. She texts me when she has to and when she has a question she knows I'm there for her,” Wendy Shay said on the Cosmopolitan Mix on Joy FM, Tuesday.

Shay’s denial follows a recent social media post by Fantana that claimed people at the Rufftwon records, including Wendy Shay and Bullet, have been torturing and bullying her.

“I won’t allow you guys to use me, play me and make me look like the bad guy. WE ALL KNOW THE TRUTH. The TRUTH THAT YOU BOTH ARE SCARED OF. Since you guys want everything to be public. WHY DONT I JUST TELL THE TRUTH? “ Fantana wrote on her social media handle.

However, Wendy Shay told Mamavi Owusu Aboagye, host of the show that “I haven't heard anything about her being bullied in the Rufftown family. Honestly, if it's true I didn't know about that.”

“We are very fine. We don't see each other every day because everybody is off doing their things,” she added.

Commenting on reports Fantana has left the Rufftown Records music label, she said that “all I know is that she is being managed by a different management team that does not work at Rufftown but she is still on the label.”

Border closure is yielding positive results for Nigeria - CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele

Border closure is yielding positive results for Nigeria - CBN Governor, Godwin?Emefiele
Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Godwin Emefiele has said the closure of Nigeria’s land borders by the Federal Government is yielding positive economic results for the country.

He said before the borders are reopened, “there must be concrete engagements with countries that are involved in using their ports and countries as landing ports for bringing in goods that are smuggling into Nigeria.”

Emefiele was reacting to complaints against the border closure from sections of the Nigerian economy and neighbouring countries. He spoke on Monday, October 28th after a meeting with President Buhari at State House in Abuja.

Nigeria closed its land borders in August, only three months after signing the African Continental Free Trade Agreement. The government said the measure is to curb influx of smuggled goods from neighbouring countries such as Benin, Niger and Cameroon. The goods mostly involved are used cars, used clothes and rice.

Emefiele said there has been an “astronomical growth” in the number of rice farmers and local production of the commodity has increased “exponentially” in recent years.
“Between 2015 and now, we have also seen an astronomical rise in the number of companies, corporate and individuals that are setting up mills, integrated mills and even small mills in the various areas.
“And the Central Bank and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development have been at the centre of not just only encouraging the production of rice in Nigeria but also funding these farmers by giving them loans to buy seedlings, fertilisers or some of the herbicides that they need for their rice production,” he said.
The governor, who said the border closure followed complaints by rice processors and poultry farmers, said the government had tried to close the bank accounts of those smuggling or dumping rice on the country.
“Recently, and this is the absolute truth, about two weeks before the border closure, the chairman of the Rice Processors Association, incidentally, he owns Umza Rice in Kano, he called me and said that all the rice millers and processors were carrying in their warehouses nothing less than 25,000 metric tons of milled rice in their warehouses.
“That this rice had been unsold because of the smuggling and dumping of rice through Republic of Benin and other border posts that we have in the country and that he would want us to do something about it.
“Secondly, we also have members of the Poultry Association of Nigeria who also complained that they had thousands of crates of eggs that they could not sell with even some of the processed chickens that they could not sell also arising from problem of smuggling and dumping of poultry products on Nigeria.
“I was told also that after some meetings that were held, in addition to those engagements that we (CBN) also held with the president, the border was closed subsequently, ” Emefiele said.

New minimum wage applies only to federal government workers - (NGF)

The new minimum wage applies to only federal government workers - Nigerian Governors Forum

The Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF) has reacted to the new minimum wage agreement between the federal government and organised labour, and according to them it only applies to federal government workers.

Speaking after the Federal Executive Council directed the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission and the ministry of labour to send the “consequential adjustments table” to states and local governments, NGF Chairman and Governor of Ekiti, Kayode Fayemi averred that the FEC does not determine what happens in states.

Fayemi also told newsmen at the end of a meeting with governors in Abuja on Monday October 28, that the Governors' forum will stick to what has been agreed in different states.

“I am sure you know the FEC does not determine what happens in the states, the states have their own states executive councils and that is the highest decision-making body at the state level,” he said.
“The forum (NGF) as the representative body of the states followed what happened in the negotiations that transpired. As far as we are concerned, the best that the forum can do is stick to what has been agreed with states.
“States were part of the tripartite negotiation and agreed to N30,000 minimum wage. But states also know there will be consequential adjustments. That would be determined by what happened on a state-by-state basis because there are different numbers of workers at the state level, there are different issues at the state level.
“Every state has its own trade union, with a negotiating committee and they would undertake this discussion with their state government. That is simply what we have said.
“The day after the agreement was reached with labour, I was on record on Channels TV, and I made the position of the states clear that for us, we have always been clear that this was a national minimum wage increase, not a general minimum wage review.
“So to that extent, we do not want the media to confuse issues about a national minimum wage increase. And yes that may necessitate consequential increment and we have no doubt about that. But that is a matter for the states to discuss with their workers.
”Every state has its own trade union, with a negotiating committee and they would undertake this discussion with their state governments. That is simply what we have said" Fayemi added.

59-year-old Cheah Siew Im who defrauded people in the United States with stolen identities and false stories for almost 20 years, has been jailed after she was caught speeding in Virginia driving a Porsche and using her old roommate’s driving license.

The Malaysian-born con artist stole at least 6 identities including those of her roommates and nail technicians, and reportedly convinced professional athletes and successful executives that she was the granddaughter of Singapore’s first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, and a close friend of former US president, Barack Obama.
Cheah was sentenced to 51 months in an American prison after pleading guilty to identity theft and fraud after being arraigned in court following her arrest in 2017. She convinced her victims to invest in Nigerian oil and Washington sports teams, but spent the money on high-end cars, plastic surgery and designer handbags.
“Had we known she was not being honest about her real identity, age and criminal background, we never would have trusted her,” the Washington Redskins player's agent she defrauded of $1.2m wrote in a letter to the court. She “is very manipulative and has shown no remorse for the heartaches she has caused”.

For years, the FBI found no trace of her big spending in bank records. One victim said she would use him as a middleman for wire transfers and take her money in cash. In past court proceedings, Cheah said she lived off her past earnings as a plastics executive.

Another victim named Alan Perez, a chef, said in a letter to the court that “She does not use guns, knives, or any other sort of physical weapon like many criminals. Language and emotion are her weapons and armed with them she can easily infiltrate the mind of anyone she wishes to prey upon.” Perez ended up with $250,000 in debt and estranged from his parents.

Arrest Yahoo boys and stop harassing innocent young Nigerians- President Buhari tells Police

Worried by the repeated stories of harassment from policemen shared by many young Nigerians, President Buhari has cautioned men of the Nigerian Police to stop with the indiscriminate arrest of young Nigerians in their bid to arrest `yahoo criminals.’
The President gave this word of caution when he spoke at the opening ceremony of the Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers in Lagos on Monday October 28th.

Represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, President Buhari said that the service the police force rendered was one Nigerians could not do without as it was the closest to the grassroots.

“Recently many civil society groups have complained about the arrest of young men and women just because they look successful and are carrying laptops. Yes we must apprehend yahoo criminals but we cannot harass young men and women on the streets and in taxis, most of whom are merely going about their legitimate businesses.
“There are also cases of extra judicial killings and injuries; misuse of weapons and excessive use of force by some members of the force. This sort of conduct by a few bad police officers must stop, and it is the duty of you senior and strategic leaders of the Police force to ensure that impunity of any kind is discouraged and punished where it is found.’’ President Buhari said

The President added that the Nigeria Police force was one of the proudest national assets as it was the largest police force in Africa.

FIFA doesn’t care about racism in football, they respect nobody’ - Yaya Toure

FIFA doesn?t care about racism in football, they respect nobody? - Yaya Toure
Yaya Toure has said FIFA is not doing enough to stamp out racism and that England should have walked off the pitch in the face of monkey chants during their Euro 2020 qualifier in Bulgaria.

The 36-year-old former Barcelona and Manchester City midfielder made the comments to AFP after Qingdao Huanghai clinched promotion to the Chinese Super League at the weekend. England’s 6-0 victory in Sofia earlier this month was marred by racist chants and Nazi salutes from a section of Bulgarian fans.

The game was halted twice during the first half but England players opted to complete the match instead of walking off the pitch.
“This is a shame, why are you playing for England? They are always talking, ‘Blah, blah, blah’, and what? Nothing changes” Toure, who has been outspoken on football’s racism problem, said of the decision.
The four-time African player of the year said: “People from FIFA don’t care anyway because we’ve been talking about this, but it’s still continuing. I don’t want to say that I’m not concerned, I’m concerned”.
“They have to be serious about it, players need to make serious moves about it otherwise they (the racists) will continue to do that. They have to get the players out of the field. They respect nobody’.

Toure was speaking after he played a pivotal role for Qingdao in a 2-0 win on Saturday at Shanghai Shenxin, attended by just a few hundred spectators.
